Did you know? Effective September 15, 2002, if you own a craft 4 metres and under
fitted with a motor or a Personal Water Craft (PWC), you are now "required by law"
to have proof of competency onboard (PCO Card).
The "Competency of Operators of Pleasure Craft Regulations" require operators of
pleasure craft fitted with a motor and used for recreational purposes to have proof
of competency onboard at all times (PCO Card). These requirements are being phased
in over 10 years.
Who Is Affected?
- September 15, 1999

All operators born after April 1, 1983 must have proof
of competency on board.
- September 15, 2002

All operators of craft under 4 metres, fitted with a motor (including PWC) must
have proof of competency onboard (PCO Card).
- September 15, 2009

All operators must have proof of competency on board.
PCO Card
- Is obtained after receiving a mark of at least 75% on a Transport Canada accredited
test, after having completed an accredited course.
- Experienced boaters have the option of taking the test without first completing
a course.
- The PCO Card is "Good for Life".
